The invention relates to an engine brake device for an internal combustion engine with an exhaust flap (22) arranged in the exhaust manifold (8) and with a valve for limiting the pressure in the exhaust manifold (8), the valve being a pressure control valve (26) and having at least one restrictor of adjustable cross-section opening as a function of the pressure in the exhaust manifold. With this arrangement a speed-dependent pressure can be achieved in the exhaust manifold (8) and the change in pressure in the exhaust manifold can thereby be adjusted to the maximum nose load of the cam, which actuates the exhaust valve (Fig.2). <IMAGE>
