An automatic dispenser for video cassettes has a gripper (22) which is movable horizontally, vertically and in the direction of the storage compartments (3) for the video cassettes. The gripper (22) can extract the video cassettes from the storage compartments (3) and convey them into a dispensing compartment (5). Conversely, however, the gripper can also extract returned video cassettes from the dispensing compartment (5) and deposit them in a storage compartment (3). The gripper (2) is movable along a gripper-slide guide (17) in the direction of the storage compartments (3). The gripper-slide guide (17) is movable in the horizontal direction along a horizontal guide carrier (9) and in the vertical direction along vertical guide columns (7). The travelling movements are controlled by a control device (28). The automatic dispenser is suitable both for the issue and for the return of video cassettes and the like and can therefore be used for rental. <IMAGE>
