Headphones with an annular, ear-enclosing pad (circumaural headphones), where the pad defines a coupling space between the area on the headphone side including the diaphragm, support plate and pad on the one hand and the ear area of the listener on the other hand when the headphones are placed on the head. The additional volume of the internal area of the pad is linked to this coupling area volume by means of apertures or perforations in the annular surface of the earpad covering layer which is directed inwardly towards the back, which additional volume preferably forms an acoustic sump by being filled with suitable foam material. The link is effected by means of bottlenecks which are inductances in the electrical analog of the equivalent circuit, thus resulting in a linearisation of the frequency response while eliminating the system-related drop in the mid-frequency range of circumaural headphones of this type.
