A nuclear reactor coolant pump including an impeller (64) and impeller mounting bolt (68) with a plurality of passages formed in the impeller mounting bolt adjacent a portion of the shaft in such a manner that the coolant is effectively pumped through the passageways to heat the shaft to a temperature approximately equal to that of the impeller, thus creating thermal balance of the pump's component parts and providing improved pump efficiency.
