Sensible heat is recovered from an effluent gas stream leaving a free-flow, non-catalytic gas generator producing gas mixts. The partial oxidation of a hydrocarbonaceous fuel, a liquid oxygenated hydrocarbonaceous fuel or a slurry of a solid carbonaceous fuel in water or a liquid hydrocarbon. The process is effected in the presence of a free oxygen-contg. gas and opt a temp. moderator at 1500-3500 degrees F and 1-250 atm. The improvement comprises: (1) passing the effluent gas through a first heat exchange zone (A) in indirect heat exchange with steam produced in step (3), thereby converting the steam to superheated steam; (2) removing a continuous stream of superheated steam as byproduct from (A); (3) passing the gas leaving (A) through a second heat exchange zone (B) in indirect heat exchange with water, thereby converting the water to steam; (4) removing raw product gas from (B); and (5) passing at least part of the steam from (B) into (A). The sensible heat in the product gas is used at its maximum temp. to produce superheated steam at a pressure which may exceed the pressure in the gas generator. This steam may be used as dispersant or carrier gas for the fuel feed or as a temp. moderator.
|
