Para-hydroxyphenyl acetic acid prepn. - by e.g. catalytic hydrogenation of para-hydroxy-mandelic acid using palladium catalyst

p-Hydroxy phenyl acetic acid (1) is prepd. by the redn. of p-hydroxy mandelic acid (II). The redn. may be effected by catalytic hydrogenation using a Pd catalyst, pref. at 80 degrees C/1 atmos. This redn. may be effected in the presence of an acid, and pref. at 80 degrees C/1 atmos. This redn. may be effected by catalytic hydrogenation using a Pd catalyst, pref. at 80 degrees C/1 atmos. This redn. may be effected in the presence of an acid. and pref. Cl ions. (I) is an intermediate. It may be converted to its amide which is itself an intermediate for the prepn. of the known beta-adrenergic blocking agent p-2-hydroxy-3-isopropyl aminopropoxy) phenyl acetamide (atenolol).
