PURPOSE:To obtain the carrier which is durable for a long time of use and easy in manufacture and attachment by joining the part of an intermediate projected from a honeycomb body to the inner face of an external cylinder by brazing or welding, etc., and joining the part between the honeycomb body and the external cylinder to this honeycomb body by the same. CONSTITUTION:A metallic carrier 1 is constituted of a honeycomb body 6, an external cylinder 7 which is longer than it and houses the honeycomb body 6 and an intermediate 8 fitted to that one part is projected from the honeycomb body 6. The vicinity of the end part of the part (a) in the intermediate 8 is joined to the outer face of the honeycomb body 6. Then this intermediate 8 is inserted into the external cylinder 7 and the positional relation of the honeycomb body 6 and the external cylinder 7 is correctly regulated. Thereafter the vicinity of the end part of the part (b) projected from the honeycomb body 6 is joined to the inner face of the external cylinder 7. Thereby the honeycomb body 6 is fixed only in the vicinity of the end part of the intermediate 8. Further this intermediate 8 is joined to the external cylinder 7 only in the vicinity of the other end part. Furthermore since both joined parts are shifted in the axial direction, the honeycomb body 6 is not restricted even when it is thermally expanded and shrunk in the radial and axial directions. Thus, carrier 1 is durable for a severe thermal cycle. |
