PURPOSE:To detect or correct a density variation correctly by making small in size a reading area at each scan position of reading device which reads a test pattern by a main scan in relation to a medium for recording in a direction corresponding to a recording element arrangement direction, and making a reading area in a subscan direction small. CONSTITUTION:A density variation reading unit 14 reads a test pattern formed on a medium for recording 2 in correction processing for making density uniform. A reading head 60 reads the line information of an image which crosses a main scan G direction directly, moving in the G direction. If the length of a direction (the main scan direction G of the reading unit, that is, a direction at right angles or almost right angles with the movement direction E of the medium for reading) corresponding to a recording element orientation within a reading range is large, the reading signal becomes one which reflects the recording characteristics of a large number of recording elements. Therefore, the sizes of the reading area in a main scan direction and a subscan direction, given as d0 and d1 for the elimination of inconvenience, have to be d0<d1. |
