PURPOSE:To improve the molecular structure of the higher fatty acid used as a lubricating agent for a magnetic recording medium and to obtain magnetic recording medium having durability by forming a magnetic layer on the surface of which such a material as to form a polymer when rubbed exists. CONSTITUTION:Straight chain hydroxycarboxylic acid is provided on the magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium. The straight chain hydroxycarboxylic acid which is the lubricating agent thereof has straight chain like a higher fatty acid and has therefore excellent orientability and lubricity. Since said acid has a hydroxyl group in the molecule, the acid reacts with the carboxylic acid group of the adjacent groups to cause an esterification reaction thus forming a strong film. The surface of the magnetic medium is protected by the film and the durability of the magnetic recording medium is improved. An improvement in the sliding strength is thus admitted with the magnetic recording medium coated with the straight chain hydroxy di-carboxylic acid and said medium exhibits excellent durability. |
