PURPOSE:To eliminate a useless waiting time at high speed transmission, to improve the transmission efficiency at error correction or the like and to reduce the talking charge by changing a reply waiting time in response to the transmission speed decided based on the evaluated line quality. CONSTITUTION:A MODEM 12 check line quality based on a reply waiting time variable procedure stored in a ROM 6. A CPU 5 based on the check result decides a baud rate and discriminates whether the baud rate is 'high speed', 'medium speed' or 'low speed'. In the case of 'low speed' as the result of discrimination, the CPU 5 sets a reply waiting time to a-second and in the case of 'medium speed' as the result of discrimination, the CPU 5 sets a reply wait time to b-second. In the case of 'high speed' as the result of discrimination, the CPU 5 sets a reply wait time to c-second. Thus, the reply waiting time is varied to improve the transmission efficiency. |
