PURPOSE:To obtain a zinc alkaline battery whose hydrogen gas evolution is reduced and discharge performance is improved by adding a specified amount of thallium, gallium, and tellurium to negative active material comprising zinc. CONSTITUTION:A zinc alloy containing 0.01-0.5wt% thallium, 0.01-0.5wt% gallium, and 0.01-0.5wt% tellurium is used as negative active material. If the content of each of these material is less than the lower limit, the expected effect cannot be obtained, and if the content exceeds the upper limit, self discharge of zinc is increased, gas evolution is not retarded, and discharge performance is not increased. Although the effect of each element added is not made clear, we presume that thallium increases hydrogen overvoltage, and gallium and tellurium forms solid solution with zinc to increase bonding strength between both atoms and to increase corrosion resistance. |
