PURPOSE:To make it possible to precisely detect output torque, by detecting a speed ratio of a torque converter so that the output torque is calculated in accordance with the relationship between the inherent speed ratio, torque ratio and torque capacity coefficient of the torque converter. CONSTITUTION:A torque converter input rotational speed Nin which is detected by a sensor 8 is read in, and a torque converter output rotational speed Nout is computed by the product of a gear ratio (i) (gear position) detected by sensors 9, 10 and a speed change unit output rotational speed NTout at the next step 21. Then, the speed ratio (e) of the torque converter is obtained by computing Nout/Nin, and at the next step, a torque ratio (t) and a torque capacity coefficient (tau) is red out from an e-t map and an e-tau map which are previously stored in a read-only memory, by a mapping technique. In accordance with the read-in torque converter input rotational speed Nin, the read-out torque ratio (t) and torque capacity eoefficient tau, the output torque Tout of the torque converter is computed with the use of formula Tout=tXtauXNin<2>, and then is delivered as an output, thereby the execution of the control program is completed.
