PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals and medicines with ease, by reacting a furan or thiophene with an oxalyl halogenide in the presence of an organic acid or anhydride thereof. CONSTITUTION:A furan or thiophene, e.g. a compound expressed by formula I (Z is O or S; Y1-Y3 are H, halogen, nitro or cyano, etc.) or formula II (Y4-Y6 are the same as Y1-Y3), is reacted with an oxalyl halogenide in the presence of an organic acid, e.g. formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, methoxyacetic acid or trifluoroacetic acid, or an anhydride thereof, e.g. monochloroacetic anhydride or trifluoroacetic anhydride, to afford the aimed glyoxalic acid halogenide of the furan or thiophene.
