The invention discloses a circuit for operating a gas inlet or exhaust valve which is held in its open and closed positions electromagnetically. In order to control the current flow (which is required while the valve is being held) through a coil which is provided with a freewheeling device, it is provided that the switching-on current be monitored directly while, during disconnection and when the freewheeling device is operating, the decay current is not measured but is simulated.
