In a battery charging installation having at least one charging switch and one charging cable, from which two leads are connected to the battery poles and which can be connected to a charging voltage source, a battery identification sensor (2) is arranged, connected to the battery (1), as a transmitter of a battery-specific signal, and at least one receiver (4) for evaluating the signal is arranged on the charging switch (16). The connection between the battery identification sensor (2) and the receiver (4) is formed by the charging cable (5). In this case, one charging switch part (100) has a circuit assembly as a receiver/transmitter (4) which is connected via a functional connection (27) to the charging switch (16). The transmitter of the circuit assembly can be activated as a function of the connection of the battery (1). The signal from the transmitter triggers a battery-specific signal by means of the battery identification sensor, so that one memory (30-33) from a memory row (14) is then triggered in the charging switch.
