A rolling tool for applying coating substances over wide areas has a layer of porous foamed material, which extends round its roller core, which is harder than the said foamed material. So that even relatively thick layers of the coating substance can be applied in a single operation, the layer of the foamed material has an outside diameter of between 100 mm and 220 mm, depending on its angle of removal and incidence, which determines the thickness of application of the coating substance. In this range of diameters, the angle of incidence acts, as the coating substance is being applied, in such a way that the choice of roller diameter can determine the application thickness. <IMAGE>
