The waste is crushed in water or another liquid in which mercury is not soluble. The crushed material is removed and the mercury extracted. Pref., the material is crushed and transported in the same container. The mercury may be removed from the rest of the waste by being heated up and evaporated off. - A container (24) is provided with a crushing frame (23) which moves vertically within the container.
