NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, lower haloalkyl or lower cycloalkyl; X is H or F). EXAMPLE:2-[4-Chloro-3-(2-ethoxycarbonylethyl)thiophenyl]-4,5,6,7--tetr ahydro-2H- isoindole-1,3-dione. USE:A herbicide capable of exhibiting improved herbicidal effect on broad-leaved weeds, e.g. Ipomoea purpurea Roth, gramineous weeds, e.g. harnyarnd gross, cyperaceous weeds, e.g. bulrush, which are weeds in upland field by foliar, soil or weeds in paddy field by treatment under flooded conditions without showing phytotoxicity to crops, e.g. soybean, rice plant, wheat, etc. PREPARATION:For example, a thiophenol derivative expressed by formula II is reacted with an acrylic acid ester expressed by formula III in a solvent, e.g. toluene, in the presence of a base, e.g. triethylamine, at 0-100 deg.C for 1-24hr to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
