Each one of a pair of heat exchangers 14 in a combustion installation 10 includes a storage space 15 which contains base granules and will be run through alternately by combustion gas and air respectively. The residual heat from the combustion gas will be absorbed by the granules and the moisture content of the gases will be condensed on the granules. The sulphur dioxide in the combustion gas will react with the basic material to give calcium sulphite and the moist granules will trap particles of ash and other contaminants which may be carried by the gas.
