A method for preparing a homeopathic solution for treating or preventing an infectious disease or one involving a gene dysfunction in an individual of a given species, and the resulting homeopathic solutions, are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of (i) forming a solution in a pharmaceutically acceptable solvent of a single-stranded nucleic acid at least 10 nucleotides long in an amount of around one nanomole per 10 ml of solvent, said acid having a sequence substantially analogous to that of a polynucleotide selected either from a portion of the genomic material of the infective agent, the transcript of said portion or, where applicable, the reverse transcript of said portion, when the disease to be treated or prevented is infectious, or from a portion of the genetic material of said species, including a portion of the nucleotide sequence related to said dysfunction, or a portion of the transcript of the dysfunction-related sequence, when the disease to be treated or prevented involves a gene dysfunction, said nucleic acid being DNA when said polynucleotide is RNA or RNA when the polynucleotide is DNA; (ii) potentising said solution by succussion; (iii) diluting the solution from step (ii) by a factor of around 10<-1>-10<-3> in an acceptable solvent, and potentising the diluted solution by succussion; and (iv) repeating step (iii) until a potentised solution diluted by a factor of at least around 10<-8> is achieved. The method is useful for preparing homeopathic solutions used in compositions for the treatment or prophylaxis of various diseases.
