The invention relates to the field of screw and bolt clamping apparatus. The device for monitoring and automatically controlling the elongation of a bolt 1 with respect to a gauge rod 2 is essentially characterised in that it comprises a sensor with feelers 6, 7 respectively on the adjacent ends 4, 5 of the said gauge rod and the said bolt, whose output is connected to a processing unit 17 in which there is introduced the set-point value of an elongation and a pressure not to be exceeded, the said unit constituting the control member of the means 11 for releasing and isolating a tension cylinder.
