Gel and powder of transition element oxides, process for the manufacture of the gel and process for the preparation of thin layers of these oxides. The process for the manufacture of a gel according to the invention consists especially in reacting, in alcoholic solution, a carboxylic acid with an organometallic compound MXn, where M denotes a transition metal, n the valency of M, X a group R<1>-O- or R<1>-C(=O)-C(R<2>)=C(R<3>)-O-, where R<1>, R<2> and R<3>, which are identical or different, are alkyl radicals, it being possible for R<2> to be hydrogen, and in allowing the solution obtained to develop at room temperature until the gel is obtained. The gel obtained can then be dried to give rise to an extremely fine oxide powder.
