The laterally protruding exterior mirror (Fig. 1) (such a mirror is often located to the right of the front passenger seat) unnecessarily increases the parking width of the car; in addition, it is easily broken off. The exterior mirror in the position of rest (Fig. 2) is therefore arranged so as to be capable of folding over, specifically it is drawn horizontally about its swivel axis (10) into this position of rest by spring force (5) as soon as the engine of the car is no longer operating. When the engine is started up, the exterior mirror (3) is immediately swivelled or folded over electrically by means of a solenoid (6) or partial vacuum canister into its working position (Fig. 1) and remains there. By means of a (push-button) switch (9) provided in the feed line to the solenoid (6), it is possible to swivel the exterior mirror (3) back into its position of rest (Fig. 2) when travelling through narrow points or when the driver is dazzled by the light of overtaking vehicles. When the (push-button) switch (9) is released, the working position is immediately restored. <IMAGE>
