A furnace cyclone for combustion of coal is supplied with air in a substoichiometric quantity. The residual air quantity is supplied to a downstream combustion chamber. In this case, air is divided up in coordination with the combustion in the furnace cyclone and the combustion chamber in such a manner that, corresponding to the course of combustion, no partial air lack arises and that the smoke gas temperature in the furnace cyclone and the combustion chamber lies above the ash melting point.
