A description is given of an embodiment of the drive device for a mechanical stage of a microscope, having an unlocking device for releasing the drive device for the purpose of rapid adjustment of the carriages in accordance with Patent ... (Application P 3505217.1-51). This embodiment is distinguished in that the brake shoes are closed rings made from plastic, and in that in the breaking position the clamping elements press with their U-limbs uniformly against the brake shoes from mutually diametrically opposite sides, the direction of the force extending through the central axis of the coaxial shafts. The breaking forces therefore act from two sides at the level of the central axis of the shaft, with the result that no force components can occur which could laterally displace the coaxial shafts.
