Process for the thermal reprocessing, in particular pyrolysis, of starting material, in particular that having a high content of polymeric organic substances, such as scrap rubber, used tyres and/or plastic wastes, in which process residues which are formed in the thermal reprocessing are discharged via a water seal, a water column corresponding to the superatmospheric pressure being maintained in the water seal when the reprocessing is carried out at superatmospheric pressure, characterised in that the reprocessing is carried out in a fluidised bed formed with fine-grained fluidised-bed material, in that a plug is formed from non-fluidised loose material, which plug, on its reactor-side end, has a dry end section lying above the water level, and in that, in operation, the plug is at least partially moved through the water seal and is fed at its reactor-side end by material given off from the fluidised bed.
