In a sailing ship, yardarm slings (20, 21, 22, 23) of variable length are used to brace the yards (5, 6), and the braces (7, 8, 9, 10) remain unchanged during sailing manoeuvres and only serve to subsequently adjust the optimum setting angle. The yardarm slings are run via a yardarm block (26, 27), a rack block (28, 29) and a foot block (30) preferably to a winch set up centrally at the foot of the mast (3). <IMAGE>
