An apparatus for compressing and decompressing digital data of a digital system using an ADRC(Adaptive Dynamic Range Coding) is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an encoder logic and a decoder logic. The encoder logic includes a maximum and minimum calculator(23) for calculating the maximum and the minimum values of a block, a subtracter for calculating the difference value between the maximum and the minimum value to provide a dynamic range, an adaptive encoder(25) for adaptively encoding the image data in the block according to the dynamic range, and a compressing converting logic(11). The decoder logic includes a decoding adaptive decoder(12) for receiving the output signal from the encoding logic.
