Highway trailers (200) can be mounted on railtruck assemblies (202) to form a train of highway trailers, the railtruck assemblies (202) including a conventional railtruck (240) which supports an intermodal adaptor (242). The highway trailers (200) include a forwardly extending tongue (206) and coupling structure at the rear to which may be secured the tongue (206) of a following trailer and the intermodal adaptor (242) of a railtruck assembly (202). The intermodal adaptor (242) is mounted on the center plate bowl (256) of the bolster (252) of the railtruck. The adaptor (242) includes locating means (266) adapted to be received within the coupling structure of a leading highway trailer (200), which locating means (266) permits the leading highway trailer (200) and intermodal adaptor (242) to become aligned with each other upon relative movement. The intermodal adaptor (242) further includes securing means (274) capable of maintaining the locating means (266) within the coupling structure of the highway trailer (200) in a completely mounted position, a coupling pin (288) and shifting means (296) capable of moving the coupler pin (288) from a lower position to a raised position where it couples the forward end of a tongue (206) of a following trailer (200) to the rear of the leading trailer (200) and the intermodal adaptor (242). When a trailer (200) is coupled into the train its road wheels are mould from a lowered position to a raised position to bear the track rails (228). <IMAGE> |
