The device features an e.g. annular transparent cavity (2) surrounded by a casing (3) and filled with a liquid having the same density as the pieces of precious or semi-precious stone or glass (5) which float freely in it. Movement within the liquid is aided by convection due to differences of temperature between parts of the cavity. The appearance is enhanced by choice of polished precious stones producing very attractive changes in reflections. The colours of stones may be selected for high contrast, and the liquid may contain a fluorescent dye and gas bubbles of comparable size.
