The present invention relates to a feed device programmed by an optoelectronic or infrared device controlling, by means of a motor, the rollers for winding up and unwinding a strip. This control device accurately determines the lengths of the strip or band which are used for the gilding (tooling) or printing. Referring to Figure 1, the device includes two rollers, one 7 of which carries the strip 2 and the other 16 controls a disc or a slotted cylinder 34. The strip is held against the control roller 16 by means of a flexible tensioner 48. The disc or the slotted cylinder converts a visible or infrared ray into light pulses which excite an emitter/receiver and controls a counter having multiple preselected programmes acting on the drive mechanism of the rollers and the speed and length of unwinding of the strip. The present invention is used in the printing and gilding (tooling) industry. <IMAGE>
