Process for regenerating a catalyst containing at least one contaminating metal of the vanadium, nickel and iron group. According to this process the operation takes place as follows: a. The catalyst is calcined 1 in the presence of a gas containing oxygen so as to remove at least 90 % of sulphur; b. The catalyst originating from stage a. is placed in contact 3 with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide 4 containing at least one cation which has only a single degree of valency, so as to remove at least 10 % of the deposited metals of the vanadium, nickel and iron group, and c. The regenerated catalyst is separated 11 from the aqueous solution 5 containing the removed metals in solution. Application to the regeneration of spent catalysts. <IMAGE>
