Apparatus for the treatment of waste water using anaerobic microorganisms immobilised on supports, consisting of a closed vertical vessel comprising a rotating central shaft, equipped at its base with means for the entry of the waste water to be treated and in its upper part with means for the exit of the treated water and the discharge of the fermentation gases produced, characterised in that the vessel comprises a superposition of supports for the anaerobic microorganisms, some 2 being driven in a rotational motion, the others 3 being stationary. The superposition of the supports is advantageously alternating, a support driven in a rotational motion being superposed on a stationary support. The supports have a surface with concavity preferably pointing towards the lower part of the apparatus. <IMAGE>
