A rectangular, flat protective covering made of plastic material for receiving identity cards or similar cards, consisting of an upper plate and a lower plate connected to the upper plate, having an elongate gripping aperture constructed in one of the plates, and having an insertion aperture for the card, at least one of the plates consisting of transparent plastic material. It is characterised in that a clip is provided for the releasable attachment of the protective covering to a garment or the like, which clip can be attached selectively at a number of points on the protective covering, namely approximately centrally in the region of the insertion aperture or approximately centrally in the region of one of the two longitudinal edges of the protective covering. <IMAGE>
