In a process for disposing of chlorine-containing wastes, in particular domestic and municipal refuse, by incineration and use of the heat of combustion for supplying useful energy into a system having a combustion zone for the wastes, a heat transfer zone for the generation of useful energy and a gas purification zone and, possibly, a combustion air heating zone, to prevent dioxin formation from phenol-containing hydrocarbons formed by the action of heat and hydrogen chloride, it is proposed that the temperature of the exhaust gas leaving the heat transfer zone is adjusted to a temperature level above the condensation temperature of HCl to at least 300 DEG C, at this temperature, to bind chlorine, the exhaust gas is permeated in a finely dispersed manner with a basic pulverulent reaction substance in a reaction zone and at the end of the reaction zone gas and reaction substance are then separated and the gas is given a secondary purifying treatment in the gas purification zone. An appropriate plant is provided in the region of the exhaust gas plant with a reaction stage (10a), (10b) having means (3) for addition of a reaction substance into the hot exhaust gas. <IMAGE>
