A safety belt restraining device, especially in motor vehicles, having a self-locking belt retractor with at least one vehicle-sensitive blocking device and a clamping device which is arranged so as to block the belt and has two clamping jaws between which the belt is guided, an inertial element being provided which is connected to at least one movably arranged clamping jaw for direct actuation of the clamping device, is to be improved in that the design of the clamping device is to be simplified and the lateral deflection of an inertial element is to be rapidly converted into a closing movement of the clamping device. To achieve this, provision is made for the inertial element (31, 49) to take the form of a weight which is suspended in pendulum fashion between an upper restraint (32, 50) and a lower restraint (33; 51, 52) and for at least one restraint (32, 33; 51, 52) to initiate a directed movement of the movably arranged clamping jaw (14, 43) during lateral deflection of the inertial element (31, 49) out of the rest position. <IMAGE>
