PURPOSE:To render a memory characteristic to a thick cell as well and to improve display quality by using a liquid crystal material of which the phase changes in order of an isotropic phase, cholesteric phase and smectic C* phase or in order of an isotropic phase and smectic C* phase from the high temp. side. CONSTITUTION:The ferrodielectric liquid crystal compsn. of which the phase changes in order of the isotropic phase, cholesteric phase and smectic C* phase or in order of the isotropic phase and smectic C* phase from the high temp. side is used for the element constituted by disposing a pair of substrates, at least one of which is transparent and on which electrodes are coated, in a manner as to face each other, holding the feeroelectric liquid crystal compsn. between such substrates provided with a gap via a spacer and providing at least a sheet of a polarizing plate thereto. The memory characteristic is thereby provided to the element at a practicable thickness (d 3mum) and high contrast (>=6) is obtd. in a guest-host mode having no uneven colors and dependency on visual angles. The characteristic with which the contrast does not change with a temp. change is thus attained in approximately the entire temp. region of the smectic C* phase. |
