In an ignition device for internal combustion engines with a switching element which disconnects the ignition coil from the DC source as a function of the ignition time and of the charge state of the ignition coil, having a monitoring resistor in series with the ignition coil and the switching element at which a voltage which is proportional to the charge state of the ignition coil can be measured, and having an auxiliary switching element which prevents premature triggering of the ignition spark before the ignition time, according to the invention the switching element is at the same time constructed as an auxiliary switching element which can be controlled by means of a sensor element which acts directly as an induction voltage sensor, it being possible to deactivate the sensor element at the ignition time by means of a second switching element. In order to store ignition energy, the ignition device does not require any additional auxiliary switching element which switches large electrical loads. In this case, misfirings in the internal combustion engine are reliably avoided. This means it is not possible for the internal combustion engine to be destroyed by misfirings.
