A fibre optic level sensor has a light-conducting core (9) and an optical fibre (8) which is bent in the shape of a U and has a cladding (10) enclosing said core, and whose first limb (13) is coupled to a light source and whose second limb (14) is coupled to a light detector by means of which it is possible to detect the changes in transmission occurring as the U-shaped end (7) is dipped into a liquid. The U-shaped end (7) is arranged in the interior of a protective tube (1), which forms a measuring chamber (4) open at one end and is retracted with respect to the tube end. The straight sections (15, 16), bordering on the U-shaped end (7), of the optical fibre (8) are enclosed by at least one drop catcher (17, 20, 21, 22) which forms rectangular corners running round as a shoulder along the cladding surfaces of the straight sections (15, 16) and in which a liquid can be held fast by means of adhesive forces. <IMAGE>
