H2 prodn. involves (a) reacting gaseous hydrocarbons with steam in a reformer; (b) reacting the gas obtd. with more water in a staged converter; (c) removing CO2 and/or H2S from the gas in a purifier with suitable re-evaporator, which pref. is supplied with the thermal energy in the conversion gases; (d) generation of the steam needed for the reactions in a process steam boiler, using the thermal energy produced in the plant, and (e) purifying the water produced in the plants and supplied to the steam boiler. The improvement is that 3 additional stages are empolyed, hese being (f) recovery of the waste heat from the gases and liq. from the H2 generation plants and subsequent treatment stages and use of this for heating the water and other aq. liquids to a temp. below the b.pt. of the water at the operating pressure, (g) passing the reformer and converter process charge gas at low temp. and without preheating to a saturation zone or column where it is contacted with water or another aq. liq. so that the thermal energy of the water is removed and the gas is satd. with water vapour at a temp. lower than the b.pt. at the operating pressure during reforming, and (h) heating this mixt. and adding more water vapour from the process steam boiler at the reformer. |
