PURPOSE:To obtain industrially and advantageously the titled compound from a single raw material by one-step reaction, by reacting methyl acetate or methyl propionate as a main raw material with oxygen in the presence of a specific catalyst in the gas phase. CONSTITUTION:A gaseous methyl acetate or methyl propionate is mixed with both a carrier gas such as N2 and O2, and fed into a catalyst layer of a solid catalyst expressed by the formula (M is metal atom), which is obtained by making 1 or >=2 oxides of elements selected from V, Cr, Co, Ni, Mo, W and Pd and/or a heteropoly acid having 1 or >=2 elements selected from V, Mo and W as a condensed coordination element present in a solid catalyst having an acid point of pKa<=3.0 as acid strength, at a space velocity on the catalyst of 300-5,000ml/hr/ml-Cat., and reacted at 200-600 deg.C in the gas phase to obtain the aimed compound. EFFECT:Especially, methyl acetate can be synthesized from methanol. Since metanol is a readily available inexpensive raw material, the process is an industrially useful synthesis method. |
