Programming unit for controlling the operation of a washing machine comprising an electromechanical component with synchronous motor (10) driving cams interacting with breakers or switches the state of which depends on the angular position of the cams. These breakers control the electrical power supply to the elements of the washing machine. A microprocessor (14) determines the stoppage periods of the motor (10) and hence the period of operation of at least some of the washing machine's operations.
