The structure of an optical cable element comprises a mechanical support surrounded by a section of thermoplastic material having grooves for the optical fibres. The grooves have peripheral openings of width less than the dia. of the fibre along more than half their length. These grooves are obtained by extrusion of the thermoplastic material. The depth of the grooves is between four and six times the dia. of the optical fibres.
