A dyestuff soln. is made by (1) emulsifying a dyestuff (I) and an inert medium (II) in a mixt. of a first polymeric emulsifying component (III) and a first solvent (IV), and (2) immobilising the resulting emulsion by adding a coagulating component (V) in a second solvent (VI) which is miscible with the (IV), the components (III) and (V) being of opposing ionic activity. Pref. (III) is a polymer with hydrophilic gps. such as carboxyl or amino gps. in the main chain together with hydrophobic gps. or side chain on the main chain, esp. where (III) is a vinyl-maleic polymer, and (IV) is water. (I) is e.g. a vat dye or a reactive dye which is neutral or which has the same ionic activity as the (III). (II) is e.g. air or an aliphatic hydrocarbon. (V) has opposing ionic activity to (III) and when (III) has negative ionic activity (V) is pref. an aliphatic amine, a quat. ammonium cpd. or an aliphatic polyamide with an amino gp. at one or both ends of the polymer chain, and (VI) is water.
