In a process for applying an electrically insulating coating to sheet steel, which coating in particular permits satisfactory welding of the stacked punched metal sheets, the sheet steel is brought into contact with a treatment fluid containing a resin which in an alkaline medium can be diluted with water, and from 0.1 to 80 parts by weight - based on 100 parts by weight of resin - of fluoride of a polyvalent metal, especially aluminium fluoride. The treatment fluid is then dried on and, if required, an annealing step is carried out. Preferred embodiments of the invention are designed for using a treatment fluid which in addition - based on 100 parts by weight of resin - contains from 0.1 to 40 parts per weight of borate, is applied with rollers and is dried on at from 120 to 350 DEG C.
|
