The towing bar consists of a longitudinal member (1) and a transverse member (2, 3). The transverse member is composed of two parts (2, 3) which can be swivelled independently of one another about a normal axis with respect to the longitudinal member, each of these parts (2, 3) being constructed essentially in angled form with legs (2a, 3a) extending in the towing direction. In order to achieve automatic adaptation to different body sizes of persons which are to be towed and to fix an adaptation which has occurred, the parts (2, 3), mounted at the ends of their legs (2a, 3a) extending in the towing direction, of the transverse member can be fixed simply under the influence of the towing load in at least two swivel positions. At the same time, the transverse member parts (2, 3) are coupled at the longitudinal strut (1) so as to be capable of sliding in its longitudinal direction in order to achieve this fixed setting. In addition, a lock which engages between the longitudinal member (1) and each of the transverse member parts (2, 3) during the sliding movement is provided. <IMAGE>
