The device comprises one or more analogous incubation tanks 2 in which are arranged a combination electrode 4 for measuring potential, a pipe 6 for injecting the water to be analysed, provided with an electrovalve 13, a pipe 7 for injecting a sterilizing agent, provided with an electrovalve 14, a pipe 8 for injecting a suitable culture medium, provided with an electrovalve 15, a thermistor 9, a level indicator 10. Each tank 2 is provided with a heating resistor 11 and a draining pipe 12 provided with an electrovalve 16. Automation of the device is achieved by means of a microprocessor card 23 which activates and controls the different sequences of a measurement cycle and ensures the detection and counting of the coliform bacteria present in an analysed water sample. <IMAGE>
