A run-up rail (18) is arranged in the region of the mounting point underneath a conveyor cable (2) of the chair lift. The said run-up rail (18) has a rising section (19) and a falling section (20). At the lower part of a suspension gear (7) of each chair (6) a roller is mounted which is intended to roll on the run-up rail (18). The upper end of the suspension gear (7) is connected to the conveyor cable (2) so as to be non-slidable but swivellable. During the running up of the aforesaid roller onto the rising section of the run-up rail, the suspension gear (7) is swivelled backwards, as a result of which a reduction in the speed of the chair is brought about although the conveyor cable is moved forwards at constant speed. At the same time, the chair (6) is raised. An elevation (25) in the ground is arranged underneath the end region of the rising section of the run-up rail. The passenger waits on this elevation in the ground for the chair which arrives at reduced speed and then sits down on it. A short time afterwards the roller passes over the highest point of the run-up rail and moves onto the falling section (20) which is responsible for a controlled acceleration of the chair. With this arrangement, getting into the chair is made easier for elderly people or children. <IMAGE>
