A new method is described for designing on a drawing board, using a plotter which is to be laid on the drawing sheet of the drawing board, an input unit with a plurality of keys and a control unit, such as a computer or the like, at least one length command and one direction command being sent by the input unit to the control unit for the controlled movement of the drawing nib of the plotter over the drawing sheet. As a result, not only is the production of the rough draft facilitated, but separate digitalisation and inputting of the values into the computer become superfluous. The length command which serves to produce the controlled movement of the drawing nib is composed of a plurality of preferably different length commands. A device for carrying out the method is characterised by a drawing board, on which a plotter rests, a control unit, such as a computer or the like, and an input unit with at least four direction keys by which the drawing nib can be moved in the coordinate system determined by the plotter in accordance with the predetermined length, and by at least four length keys, by which a particular length for the movement of the drawing nib can be predetermined.
