An apparatus for cleaning large-area textile coverings, in particular rugs and carpeting, has a rinsing chamber (8), open at the underside, which can be placed on the textile covering and displaced thereon and the side walls of which are constructed as a double wall (8.11-8.12 and 8.21-8.22) running all the way round. The continuous interspace (8.3) between outer wall and inner wall is connected to a vacuum chamber via a suction connection (12.1) and forms a downwardly opening, substantially annular sucking-up nozzle. The rinsing chamber (8) rests, by the outer-wall bottom edge provided with sealing faces (8.112, 8.122), on the textile covering (7.2). Arranged in the interior of the rinsing chamber (8) are spraying nozzles (13) and also an ultrasound transmitter (16), and the water level (W) inside the rinsing chamber is controlled such that the spraying nozzles (13) and the ultrasound transmitters (16) are submerged in the water. The dirty water escaping at the bottom edge of the inner wall (8.21, 8.22) is continuously sucked up. <IMAGE>
